Grace (not real name) is a nurse who was born in a polygamous home. She claims that, her step-mother killed her sister.
“I came from a polygamous home, my father married many women in his lifetime, my mother was the second wife and she had five of us, we were so many that we didn’t even know each other.
My mother had good siblings who were always helping her to train us, so two of us manage to become graduates, while most of the other children became vagabonds; some ended up as carpenters, mechanics or jobless, my father who was a driver in an oil company couldn’t train all his children , they were just so many. He died of heart attack and this made our situation worst, because when he was alive, even though he couldn’t pay our fees and provide those things children needed, he made sure there was enough food in the house and leave the soup ingredients aspect to the women
My elder brother got a job with a private company after graduation and my immediate elder sister was employed by a bank. These made our fortune to change, but my mother encouraged us to love our half brothers and sisters. One of my step-mothers who have three children was the most troublesome one among the wives. It is also common knowledge that she was fetish, we were taught not to eat her food or collect personal items from them. Yet mum still encouraged my brother and sister to buy things for them whenever they were coming home for the weekend.
My sister finally saved enough money and bought a car, she also bought a small piece of land and started erecting a flat for us so we can have better accommodation and move out of the family house. Everybody was excited that something good was coming out of our house, but a man of God from a new church which they were attending warned my sister to be careful, that somebody was trying to kill her for trying to surpass her other siblings. When my sister informed of this development, we all suspected our step-mother. By then we were hearing rumours of things she was telling people about my mother’s children, especially my sister.
Some few weeks to her death, our mother had a dream where her mother came to warned her to pray for her daughter, because some someone was going to kill her. We prayed over it. But my sister came home that weekend to supervise her building, my step-mother who would normally pretend that she didn’t hear or know when any of my siblings was home, was the first person to rush and hugged her, my sister later told my mother that a kind of current passed into her body when our step-mum hugged her. My mother prayed for her and we forgot everything in the excitement of seeing some of the things she bought for us. If only we had paid much attention, may be my sister would have been alive today. That night none of us could sleep, as my sister started having temperature, she was rushed to the local clinic close to us but the doctor referred us to the general hospital, on the way to the hospital, my loving sister gave up the ghost.
Everybody cried, my mother openly accused her co-wife of killing her daughter, but nobody could arrest her because of lack of evidence, but everybody knew, even her son who was a drunk accused her of killing my sister, so what more prove do we need. Wickedness and jealousy made her killed a gentle soul that was trying to raise the family name. I don’t think I can ever forgive her or go near her. We are trying not to hate her children, but how do you love people that come from such woman?
