The earlier planned indefinite strike by the teachers in Taraba State has been shelved following a meeting held in Government House Jalingo between the leadership of Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) Taraba State chapter and Governor Danbaba Suntai.
LEADERSHIP recalls that the union threatened to embark on indefinite strike if the State government continue to play down their demands.
The teachers in a communiqué issued recently after their meeting itemised their grievances against the government to include delay in teachers’ promotions, non-implementation of national minimum wage, non-payment of yearly increments in salaries and allowances and teachers’ salary arrears.
Speaking with our correspondent in his office at NUT complex in Jalingo the state capital, the chairman NUT, Taraba State chapter, comrade Aliyu Mafindi said both the government and the leadership of NUT came out of the meeting with smiling faces.
He said governor Danbaba had agreed that the state government would with immediate effect pay the teachers the minimum wage as from the end of this month and also agreed to pay the other increments in phases in the next three months.
Comrade Aliyu further explained that there was no need for the leadership of the union to push ahead with the strike even though the implementation of the increments had been delayed by the government.
