The Secretary, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Social Development Secretariat, Mrs. Blessing Onuh has disclosed that the day-old baby picked from Mabushi on Sunday is in good hands and responding to treatment at the National Hospital Abuja.

Onuh, who disclosed this in an interview with LEADERSHIP in her office yesterday, said the secretariat had made arrangements to transfer the baby to its home in Gwagwalada once she is discharged from the hospital.

“The baby is doing well and is responding to treatment and once she is discharged from the hospital, we will take her to our orphanage for care. The child will remain under the custody of the Social Development secretariat because she is now our responsibility,” she said.

Speaking further on the health of the baby, the secretary said “We don’t know yet the nature of the infections the child has because the hospital has not disclosed that to us. But they have established that she has an infection.”

She noted that the issue of abandoned kids was a challenge to the government, with four cases recorded this month but added that the government was doing its best.

Onuh disclosed that presently, three children from the home were on admission at Wuse General Hospital for various ailments and further stated that some of the abandoned children under its custody test positive to HIV after testing but were receiving treatment.

“We don’t expect people to misbehave but when they misbehave, government is there to help out and save lives. We want a situation where people should be able to take responsibility for the upbringing of their children but when it happens, we always respond to it.”

Recall that a baby was picked on plot 107, Mabushi Road, Abuja by the police and handed over to the secretariat, where she was taken to the National Hospital Abuja for medical attention.
