Cases of rape have been on the increase in the country, to where that very young girls are now falling prey to people with such twisted minds. Blessing Ukemena writes on how two sisters under the age of 10 became the latest rape victims.

Bad things are happening every day. Is there anything as bad as having two of your daughters raped on the same day and worse still, both being below the age of 10? This is a story of how two children aged nine and six were both raped by two males on Valentines Day, while on their way to school.

No one knows if the accused persons were under some influence when they committed the act as it is the word of the little girls against those of the accused, Haladu and Inusa.

According to the details of the case which is still in the Upper Area Court, Nasarawa state; Haladu Babaji and Inusa Adamu are both accused of conspiracy and rape. Both males aged 25 and 20 respectively, decided to carry out their dastardly acts against the children not far from their residence which is a compound located opposite Dantata quarters, One Man Village, Nassarawa state.

The mother of the two girls, Mrs. Philomena Augustine, speaking to LEADERSHIP SUNDAY said that the children were on their way to school on the fateful day, February 14, when Haladu and Inusa accosted them. The school which Emmanuela, and Angela, aged six, attend is not far from the house so they always went by themselves.

Mrs. Philomena noticed that something was wrong with her girls when they returned not long after leaving the house and she promptly after questioning, took them to the Mararaba Health Center. The doctor’s report showed that the girls had signs of penetration in their private parts and deposits of semen in them as well.

Since then the little girls have been receiving treatment. Mrs. Philomena lamented that the rape incidence had gravely and psychologically affected her little girls. Their performance in school dropped drastically, even their appetite was affected. After the incident, report was made to the divisional Police qoffice, New Nyanya.

In court, both Haladu and Inusa denied the allegation, pleading not guilty to the rape charge. The police prosecutor in the case, Inspector A. Abu objected to bail for the accused persons citing that investigations were still in progress, pursuant to section 283 of the Penal Code Law that the offense is not normally bailable and not compoundable. The two accused were consequently ordered to be remanded in prison custody.

Mother of the defiled girls later told LEADERSHIP SUNDAY that although Haladu and Inusa denied raping her daughters,  she is hopeful that the court will ensure that justice is done in the case. When asked on her reaction if the court decides to discharge and acquit the accused persons, she replied that God will fight for her and the children.

At the time of this report the accused still being held in custody and it seems the girls are recovering from the incident although they refused to speak to LEADERSHIP SUNDAY about it.

The lovely girls came to court in their school uniforms the day LEADERSHIP SUNDAY met with them and Emmanuela said she was in Primary three while her younger sister was in Nursery two.

It is pathetic that anyone would contemplate having sexual even relations with such young children! It only goes to show the level to which the society has deteriorated. Young men now prey on underage children to satisfy their sexual urge.

Similarly, cases of lesbian and gay relationships are increasing by the day. The Christian faith would say that these are the signs of the end of times but some others would say that it’s just a by-product of the increasing dark side of human nature.

May be ladies should start to learn skills like karate and other self defense techniques from a very young age in order to guard themselves against  such cases. Issues affecting women should also be given a little more attention like that which HIV/AIDS and other diseases prevention are getting.

It has been noted that gender issues have taken a back seat for a while now. Several non-governmental organisations who are involved in gender issues should not rest on their oars in fighting for the womenfolk.

Will one say that these little girls by way of action or dressing incited Haladu and Inusa to rape them? It is a food for thought for the whole society, the laws guiding the rights of women should be enforced to the letter in order to put a stop to the rampant cases of rape in the society.
