The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Elder Godsday Orubebe, has said that as part of a major intervention, akin to the Niger Delta Development, his ministry has adopted considerable initiatives to absorb natives of the region in the various development moves of government, aimed at urgently addressing the socio-economic problems in the oil rich coastal states.

Orubebe made this comment at a plenary session of the just concluded 2nd South South Economic Summit  in Asaba, Delta State.

Although, the minister put no figure to the total cost of the initiatives which, he said, had commenced in various phases, he informed participants that aside the proactive steps in nine major areas - which he reeled out to include employment generation, education, transportation, water provision, environment, among others, his Ministry’s package include comprehensive and coherent programme of investment in the social and public sectors of the various communities of the Niger Delta region.

Elder Orubebe explained that one of such programmes, called ‘the Niger Delta Collaborative Development Programme,’ is designed to articulate and spell out the future intervention measures for the Niger Delta region, in consonance with the Niger Delta Master Plan and Nigeria’s Vision 20:2020.
