As a way of checking the abuse of use of sirens by individuals not authorized to do so, the acting Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar has issued a directive to officers and men of the Nigeria Police force to arrest individuals who flaunt the order.

Abubakar who spoke with journalists in a news briefing in the Anambra State police command headquarters, Awka said that the force has decided to come hard on those who flaunt the law and not even senators would be spared.

The police IGP stated that it is not also necessary for the police to drive around town every day blaring sirens and scaring away tax paying citizens of the country as it is not the best form of policing. He promised to put a stop to unnecessary use of sirens by the police as there are people who are authorized to blare sirens.

“We have noted specifically that Anambra is one state where there is excessive use of sirens, and we have directed the commissioner of police here to check that. The press can also help to serve as monitors, such that when it is becoming too much and nothing is done, you report to us.”

He stated that the law on the use of siren is clear, and only those who are empowered by the law should use them, while urging his men to ensure that anyone not authorized to blare the siren who does so should be arrested as his office would not interfere with the prosecution of such persons.
