Real Madrid is the most successful club in the Spain and Europe having won the Laliga 31 times and the Champions League nine times but have been in the shadows of Barcelona for the past three seasons. Real Madrid last won the Champions League in 2002 while Barcelona has won the Champions League three times after that in(2006,2009 and 2011).
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez in his second stint with the club promised to bring back the glory days to the Merengues. He signed Cristiano Ronaldo in a world record deal from Manchester United and Kaka from AC Milan both players former World Player of the Year’s.
He spent close to 200million and it all came to naught as Real Madrid crashed out of the Champions League in the second round and were outclassed by Barcelona in the league. In the process Manuel Pelligrini lost his job and Perez went for Jose Mourinho who won the treble for Inter Milan a first for any Italian club.
Mourinho promised Real Madrid faithful that he will deliver the league and the 10th Champions League they have all been waiting for. In Mourinho’s first El Classico he was humbled 5-0 by Barcelona the worst defeat of his managerial career and eventually lost the league to Barcelona and was knocked out of the Champions League by Barcelona again in the semi finals.
He managed to win the Copa Del Rey beating Barcelona in the finals. The season was considered a failure since Barclona won the league and Champions League but Mourinho promised that his teams always play better the second season.
Real Madrid came out blazing this season with Karim Benzema finally stepping up unlike last season where Ronaldo carried all the goal scoring burden. The trio of Ronaldo, Higuain and Benzema formed an incredible partnership and that was the fulcrum of their success this season.
Madrid has the best counter attack in the world as Mourinho perfected that aspect of the team.S ergio Ramos moved from right back to central defence due to the injury suffered by Ricardo Cavalho at the beginning of the season and it proved to be a masterstroke as Ramos and Pepe developed an incredible partnership. Kaka also showed glimpse of the form that made him win the Ballon D’or with AC Milan.
Real Madrid finally defeated Barcelona at the Nou Camp to effectively clinch their 32 league title. But most fans were a little bit disappointed to see Real Madrid crashing out of the Champions League via penalties to Bayern Munich.
Barcelona who has been Madrid’s hodoo team were out of the picture, having been knocked out by Chelsea,it was seen as the best time for Madrid to win the Champions League as Madrid’s name was all but written on the trophy after the elimination of Barcelona. It would have been a dream for Madrid’s fans to see them lift their 10th champions league crown after breaking Barca’s dominance in the league.
But Real Madrid director of institutional relations Emilio Butragueno insisted that Real Madrid had an exceptional season, he said: “The team are having an exceptional season. Our numbers in La Liga are incredible and we’ve gone very far in the Champions League, which is expected of us. We cannot ask our players to do more.”
After all is said and done Jose Mourinho is staking claims to be among the greatest coaches ever having won league titles in Italy, England, Portugal and Spain. His dream to win the Champions League with three different teams may be the reason he will stay with Real Madrid next season as he still has an unfinished business with Real Madrid.
