Plannang Pwankat lost her husband in an accident, and for 7years she said she was living in a dark world until she met Dan, a construction worker who brought smile back to her face.
“I was once married to a very nice humble man who loved me very much. He married me against his parents’ wish, because they wanted him to marry somebody from his tribe. He refused and insists wouldn’t on me against all odds. Even when I couldn’t conceive, we tried in different ways to bear children, with pressure from his family to either marry a second wife or send me away. The man refused and instead increased the intensity of his love for me. There was no time you would come to our house that you wouldn’t see me smiling. He made sure that there was always a smile on my face. Anytime I frown, he became very sad and disturbed until I started smiling again. Our house was full of laughter whenever we were alone. The only sad moments we had was when his family came to visit. They make sure they made me miserable. They didn’t fail to remind me that they never liked me and since I couldn’t give their son a child, I was nothing but a liability and a man, not a woman who was just eating their son’s food with nothing to show for it.
We were happy with each other and also vow to remain together no matter what until fate played a cruel one us.
We were married for nine years before death took him away from me; he traveled to the village and was on his way back when their car was crushed by a trailerthat lost control. My husband broke his neck and died instantly. I was devastated because I knew that he was my rock. The family descended on me like bees. They came and took everything from the house, because I never gave birth for their son, that I could not take his things to go and marry another man. They threw my personal belongings outside and took over the house. Even if they had insisted I stay, I wouldn’t have stayed because I knew that, they would end up hurting me. I believe they killed my husband.
Because I was a housewife when my husband was alive, getting a job after his death became a problem; I went from pillar to post. Thank God my parents were still alive and took me in. They encourage me not to give up. I became a shadow of my former self. I tried to start one business or the other, yet everything seemed to be working against me. There were times I felt like killing myself to join my husband, if not for my faith that forbids such things.
This went on for six years until an old friend took me to meet her boss in a construction company, where I was employed in their administrative section. I was given a room in their staff quarters and things started getting better. It was there that I met my current husband, a widower with two kids; we started dating for seven months before we finally tied the knot. Since then I have known nothing but bliss. I accept his children as mine and treat them well. They call me mother. Recently I discovered that I am pregnant at the age of 42years, when the world has given up on me. God has said he has just started with me. I still think about my late husband, I don’t know what would have happen he were alive. But I thank God everyday for the one I have now and the life I am living. I have found peace and joy at last.
