Traders in Akwa Ibom have alerted over the circulation of fake N1000 notes in the state.
LEADERSHIP investigation at the popular Akpan Ndem main market in Uyo revealed that the fake notes were first noticed by some of the traders few weeks ago after the day’s sales.
Some of the traders who spoke with LEADERSHIP at the market disclosed that some criminals in the state have been making brisk business by spending the fake notes, usually at night when unsuspecting traders often find it difficult to differentiate between genuine and fakes.
Mrs. Cecilia Okon a dry fish seller at the market for instance said she was about closing for the day’s business last weekend when some people came to buy items worth over N5000 from her; but by the following morning when she went to her bank to lodge the money, it was discovered that over ten thousand were found to be fake.
This development she said made her to inform other traders, urging them to be careful of such unscrupulous elements, especially during night transactions.
Other traders who spoke said the circulation of the fake notes could be traced to a group of bank officials who connive with fraudsters to defraud members of the public. They decried the situation and urged security agents to wade into the situation by arresting those behind the criminal deal.
