Two policemen have been arrested in Jigawa State on allegation of sexual assault. The arrest, which was confirmed by the State Police Command, was made after a corporal, whose names were withheld, was alleged to have sexually assaulted a seven-year-old girl.

The police corporal, who resides in Fagoji area, along the Emir’s Palace, Dutse, Jigawa State, has however, been detained.

The victim was said to be the daughter of a Nigerian Civil Defence Corps officer, who happened to be a neighbour to the suspected police officer.

LEADERSHIP SUNDAY  gathered that the police corporal was arrested  after the father of the victim had lodged complaints at the Dutse Police Divisional Office.

Speaking to LEADERSHIP SUNDAY in Dutse, the victim’s mother revealed that the incident occurred around 5:00pm on Thursday after her daughter left home and later came back distressed.

“When I realised she was in abnormal condition, I quickly asked her what was wrong, and at the same time, I saw  plenty of chewing gum in her hand,” she narrated.

“Initially, she resisted to speak out on what happened, saying that if she told me I will beat her. But when I convinced her, she opened up and stated that it was (the accused person) that gave her the chewing gum, which appeared unusual for the man to offer such gift to my child.

“My daughter also told me that she entered the house of the corporal to buy the chewing gum with her N5, but unknown to her, the man force her down and start assaulting her sexually,” she alleged.

In a related development, another police officer attached to Taura Local Government Police Division, who was also posted to Dutse on special assignment, was arrested for allegedly stealing goods worth thousands of naira at the Sahad Shoping Complex, Dutse.

The suspected police officer was arrested around 6:00pm after he allegedly entered a shop, carried some electronics, and attempted to leave without paying.

It was also gathered that the suspect was apprehended by security guards at the shop and later handed over to the Dutse Police division.

When contacted, the State Police Commission, Mr. Kayode Theopholus, confirmed the arrest of the two suspects.

He described the incidents as embarrassing and vowed to severely deal with any police officer found wanting.

“Even though the cases are still under investigation, I assure you that anyone found guilty would be dismissed from the service and charged to court.

“I will not tolerate any act of immorality, criminality and breach of law from my boys,” the CP stated.
