The four principal officers of the Niger State House of Assembly impeached last Tuesday have dragged 21 of their colleagues, including the new Speaker, Isa Kawu, to Minna High Court 5.
The four, led by the former Speaker Mohammed Tsowa Gamunu, are challenging their impeachment and seeking reinstatement.
In case filed at the court presided over by Justice Aliyu Mayaki and slated for May 24 for first hearing, the aggrieved former Speaker was listed as leading others, including former Deputy Speaker, Bello Ahmad, Mohammed Dada and Saadatu Kolo, in the legal battle against their impeachment last week.
The case joined the new Speaker and 20 out of the 27 members of the Assembly that impeached the former principal officers.
In the originating summon filed at the court by their counsel, led by S.I. Ahmed (SAN) and S.T. Ologunrisa (SAN) on Friday, the plaintiffs are seeking an order declaring their impeachment illegal, null and void.
They also want an order restraining the new Speaker and his principal officers from performing their functions at the Assembly.
The Speaker, Hon Kawu, confirmed that the Assembly had been served with the notice.
“We have got our lawyers to represent us. We are prepared and have put in place a formidable defence team of legal practitioners to handle the case,” he said.
