The Katsina State Command of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has apprehended one Miss Elizabeth Nwakaegbo for alleged human trafficking.
The state Comptroller, Alhaji Umar Bulama, told newsmen on Monday in Katsina that the arrest followed an intelligence report received by the command.
He said the woman was arrested along with three ladies (her victims) on the Kano-Daura road en-route Niger Republic to Europe.
Bulama identified the victims as Pamela Omokaro, Loveth Okears and Lydia Okoro; all between the ages of 19 and 21.
He said that the suspect and her victims were arrested in Kwangwalan, Daura Local Government in Katsina state, as they were attempting to cross the border on their way to Agadez, Niger Republic and to Europe.
The comptroller said that ``trafficking in person is one of the most severe violations of human rights in the world today. It is also known as the modern day slavery.''
Bulama said the Immigration officers had been trained on how to identify both the trafficker and the victims and were always on the alert.
He said the suspected human trafficker and her victims would be handed over to the National Agency for Prohibition of Traffic In Persons and other related matters (NAPTIP) Zonal Office in Kano, for necessary action. (NAN)
