The Vice Chancellor of Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo, Prof. Kolawole Jaiyeoba, has appealed to the Federal Government to extend Education Trust Fund (ETF) facilities to private universities.
Jaiyeoba spoke on Tuesday in Oyo town, Oyo State, at the inauguration of a block of classrooms built by the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC).
According to him, the extension of ETF facilities to private universities by government will further enrich education in the country.
The vice chancellor, who expressed appreciation over the donation by the NDIC, solicited for more support in other areas.
“We are young and growing. We are just seven years old and with the help of God we believe that this new development in Crowther is just the beginning," Jaiyeoba said.
Chief Oyebisi Ilaka, a member of the NDIC Board of Directors, said the aim of donating the classrooms to the institution was to provide assistance toward the enhancement of educational activities.
Ilaka, who was the facilitator of the project, also said the donation would move the country forward on the path of social and economic development.
He said the institution was one of those that benefited in the third phase of the corporation's project-based funding scheme with a grant of N20 million.
"It is a common knowledge that most of the institutions of learning in Nigeria lack infrastructural facilities resulting in poor standards of education.
“In NDIC, we have taken it upon ourselves to improve the standard of education in Nigeria,’’ he said.
Ilaka called on stakeholders and philanthropists in the country to assist in improving educational standards.
"Against this background, it has become necessary for corporate organisations and other well meaning groups and individuals within and outside the country to come to the aid of our educational institutions,’’ he added.
