As part of the components of the Nigeria-South Africa Bi-National Commission (BNC), the government of South Africa has reiterated its plans to help Nigeria combat the activities of Boko Haram and other related terror groups in the country.
This promise was made by South Africa’s Deputy President, Mr. Kgalema Motlanthe, at the start of the Eighth Session of the Nigeria-South Africa Bi-National Commission in Cape Town, South Africa.
Mr. Motlanthe said that the government of his country was not happy with the insecurity condition in Nigerian, adding that the Jacob Zuma-led government was set to partner with other foreign nations that had indicated their interests to help Nigeria.
Mr. Kgalema Motlanthe also told the Vice President Namadi Sambo-led delegation that the government of his country was determined to help the federal government combat terrorism as a way to support President Goodluck Jonathan’s earlier pleas for foreign assistance on the security issues of the country.
Expressing the firm decision of his country to work with the Nigerian government to bring the situation of Boko Haram under control, the South African Deputy President noted that South Africa was in agreement with Nigeria on the dangers posed by members of the group to Nigeria and its reputation outside the country.
Assuring that the Bilateral Commission between South Africa and Nigeria should be able to discuss the issue with the aim of coming up with greater details of the areas where Nigeria may need help, Mr. Kgalema Motlanthe said that the decision of the Jonathan-led administration to combat such a group and to remain on top of the situation and as well protect the peace loving people of Nigeria who suffer most from such attacks should be the priority now.
Meanwhile, Vice President Namadi Sambo and Deputy President Motlanthe will on Wednesday, 23 May 2012 address a media conference at the conclusion of the 8th Session of the Bi-National Commission between South Africa and Nigeria.
A jointly signed communiqué is expected to be issued by both officials at the end of the press briefing.
