The House of Representatives at yesterday’s plenary session rejected an executive Bill seeking the compulsory inclusion of cassava in the production of all the flour in Nigeria.
The bill titled “a bill for an act to provide for the mandatory inclusion of cassava in the production of all flour in Nigeria and for other matters connected therewith” failed to pass second reading as lawmakers threw out the proposal after it met stiff opposition from many lawmakers.
The bill’s sponsors had hinged arguements on the widespread availability of cassava across Nigeria. Citing President Goodluck Jonathan’s initiative on cassava, lawmakers in support said it was in place to enact a law that would make its inclusion in locally made flour compulsory.
