The Governor of Rivers State, Chief Rotimi Amaechi has blamed the rising trend of corruption in the nation on Civil Servants, stating that no politician can successfully steal government’s money without full collaboration and participation of civil servants either at the point of initiation or execution.
Governor Amaechi took this stand yesterday in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State, capital while addressing a gathering of state commissioners of civil service, some permanent secretaries, director and other high echelon in the public service at the on-going 41st Conference of the Civil Service Commissions in the Federation.
This revelation which was received with disagreement by civil servants presents at the occasion prompted the governor who was represented by his Deputy, Engineer Tele Ikuru, to stress further that; “the process of stealing government money starts and ends with the civil servants who connive with insensitive politicians whose only intention and motivation for running for the office is greed.
“Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of government are run by civil servants who are the engine room of governance.
The permanent secretary is the one responsible for the day to day operation in the MDAs and is the principle account officers who without his consent, the minister, a political appointee cannot embezzle government funds.”
