The ancient city of Kano, erupted in ecstasy of celebration yesterday, as Nigerians from all walks of life converged there to witness the turbaning of SanusiLamidoSanusi, as the Dan Majen Kano, by the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero.

The historic event, which was well attended, was well policed by security agents, apparently because of the rising threats of insecurity in the north.

Sanusi was turbaned a few minutes after 10 am, as his friends and family members watched with admiration. The venue could hardly accommodate those who had thronged the place as early as 6am.

When the Emir appeared in blue attire, Sanusi was already on the ground and the ceremony began.

“We have bestowed on you the title of Dan Majen Kano) in recognition of your experience and exposure as well as your good character. We are aware of your good work not only in Nigeria but also abroad.

“We are also aware of your patriotism and cordial relationship with the people as well as your support to the less privileged,” the royal father said.

The Emir said the nation also appreciated Sanusi’s effort at reviving the nation’s economy and urged him not to relent on the good work.

It was learnt that the title of Dan Majen Kano is very historic to the Kano Emirate as it commenced and became an inherited title by the Fulani dynasty which indicates Fulani rulership of Kano Emirate since about 500 years ago.

The title Dan Majen was exclusively reserved for the royal family members right from the Kano Habe dynasty and the Sullubawa dynasty as most prominent among those who held the title under the Sullubawa dynasty was the Emir of Kano Ali IbnAbdullahi alias Alu who reigned between 1894 and 1903.

According to history, the first category of the titles is reserved for royal family members while the second is for the descendants of the jihad leaders such as the Makama, and the third category for outstanding people who served and brought great benefit to the emirate.

Among dignitaries who graced the occasion were Speaker, House of Representatives, AlhajiAminuTambuwal, ACN leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, General MuhammaduBuhari, former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, Inspector-General of Police MD Abubakar, former Chief Judge of the Federation, Justice Muhammad LawalUwais.
