Police Arraign 4 For Beating Pastor

Three men and a  girl were on Wednesday arraigned before an Akure Chief  Magistrates’ Court on a three- count charge of felony and  assault.

The accused persons, who were docked before Chief Magistrate  Igbekele Akinyele,  were Tolulope Olatoyegun, 18, Tope Olatoye, 23, Segun Olukayode, 27 and Joshua Oni, 21.

They were jointly accused of committing  felony  on May 28  at about 3 pm at CAC Canaan Land, Lafe, Akure.

The police prosecutor, ASP Pelumi Adejuwon,  said the action of the accused was contrary to and punishable under section 516 of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Vol. I Laws of Ondo State 2006.

The accused were also alleged to have assaulted Pastor J.O. Salami by using a broken glass cup to stab him as a result of which he sustained injuries all over his body.

The prosecutor  said the offence contravened section 355 of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Vol. I Laws of Ondo State 2006.

He said the accused  also broke  into CAC Canaan Land thereby committing  felony contrary to and punishable under section 415 of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Vol. I Laws of Ondo State 2006.

All the accused persons pleaded not guilty to the four-count charge and  they elected for summary trial.

Adejuwon, who  informed the court that he had  11 witnesses to call,   asked for an adjournment to assemble them as well as  study the case file.

The defence counsel, Victor Olatoyegun,  did not object to the adjournment, but prayed the court to admit his clients to bail on liberal terms.

In his ruling, Akinyele granted bail to each of the accused persons in the sum of N50, 000 and two sureties each in like sum.

He adjourned the matter to July 17 for hearing.
