Business and social activities in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, came to an abrupt end yesterday as armed robbers stormed a fast food restaurant on Afikpo Road, a few kilometres to the Government House and made away with unspecified amount of money.

The money was about to be loaded into the ATM when the armed robbers, who rode in two  motorcycles,  shot sporadically into the air to scare passersby away before carting away the cash from the bank staff.

The six armed robbers, who were unmasked, however, wielded heavy machine guns and other assorted weapons, which shook the environment when they began to shoot.

The pandemonium caused by the heavy gunfire forced workers on the road to close their shops and offices while residents decided to stay indoors.

As a result, most banks in the state capital hurriedly closed for the day.

A detachment of policemen and soldiers, however, rushed to the scene of the robbery a few minutes after the gunmen had disappeared.

It was not clear as at press time if any arrest had been made over the raid, which, our correspondent learnt, was the third on the same bank in the past few months.

The state police public relations officer in the state, Mr. Sylvester Igbo, confirmed the incident but did not give details.
