Two yet to be identified men were at the weekend arrested in Zone 5 area of Lugbe, as armed mobile police men numbering over 40 invaded the satellite town.

Eyewitnesses say the armed security men who appeared to be acting on a tip-off invaded the area and surrounded some multi-tenanted apartments where they conducted searches on some of the apartments.

It was gathered that most of those at home at the time of the invasion were women, as most men had already gone out in search of their daily bread, leaving the women scared stiff.

A source who identified herself as Mama Nkechi said she was washing when the men came and surrounded the whole area.

“They came and stood here and I greeted them but they did not answer and proceeded to surround the entire area. They were all carrying guns and because I did not understand their mission, i rushed inside to carry my baby,” she narrated.

The eyewitness further said particular attention was paid to an apartment occupied by only men, where most of the time of the hour long search, which was simultaneously carried out in Lugbe Zone5, 7, 8 and 9 was spent.

He added during the search, a dagger was found in the home of an easy going young man, who keeps a beard and was later taken away by the search party.

Another eyewitness who preferred anonymity also said, “From here they proceeded to cashew garden where some of their men were already positioned and carried out a thorough search of some houses where they arrested two young men.”

The mission of the armed security operatives which remains unknown has sparked off rumour in the area. While some say they may have been on the trail of some hardened criminals, others say they were in search of the location of a local bomb manufacturing plant.

Efforts to find out the mission of the police men to the densely populated community however proved futile when the Lugbe Zone 5 police post was visited as officers at the counter said the DPO was not on seat.
