The Chairman of APGA in Ebonyi, Mr Jerry Obasi, said in Abakaliki on Tuesday that his purported impeachment by a faction of the party was illegal and an exercise in futility.

Obasi said in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the allegation of violation of the constitution of the party and financial mismanagement was false.

Obasi described the brains behind the plot as dissidents and non-members of the party.

“Their grand plan is to destabilise the party ahead of the forthcoming local government and 2015 general elections in the state,’’ he said.

He accused the governorship candidate of the party in the 2011 general elections, Amb. Frank Ogbuewu, of being the brain behind his ordeal.

According to Obasi, the party will not give in to the activities of those who are desperate to hijack the leadership of the party for their own selfish interest.

“We have resolved to continue to fight on as a political party. We also resolved to continue to support the National Chairman, Chief Victor Umeh, and the National Secretary, Alhaji Sani Shikarfi,” he said.

When contacted on the phone, Ogbuewu described Obasi’s allegation as a “gossip,” saying: “I will not react to gossips.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that a faction of the party had on Friday announced the impeachment of Obasi as its state chairman.

The impeachment took place during the stakeholders’ meeting comprising chairmen, secretaries and women leaders of the party at state and local government levels.

The factional members had named Mr Chinedum Nwali as the acting chairman of the party. (NAN)
