The Federal Government has donated one million assorted tree seedlings to Kano State for free distribution to the people.

Gov. Rabi'u Kwankwaso said this while launching this year’s tree planting campaign in Tukui village, in Makoda Local Government Area.

He said the state government had also produced two million assorted tree seedlings which would soon be distributed to the people across the 44 local government areas of the state.

Kwankwaso directed the Ministry of Environment to produce another one million seedlings for planting in the desert prone areas of the state.

‘’This is aimed at checking deforestation and ensure that the people imbibe the culture of planting trees in their respective areas of abode.’’

He directed the 44 local governments in the state to launch the campaign in their respective areas before the end of next month.

The governor also directed the ministry to distribute the seedlings to schools, hospitals and other public organisations in the state.

According to him, the state government will soon enact a law on the protection of forest reserves in the state.

The Commissioner for Environment, Alhaji Abdullahi Abbas, said the ministry would soon train the youths on how to plant economic trees.

He urged the people to give the state government all necessary support to ensure the success of the tree-planting campaign in the state.  (NAN)
