Despite intensive campaign on the eradication of poliomyelitis in Katsina State, seven new cases of the infection have been recorded within the last one year.

The State Commissioner of Health, Alhaji Mohammed Nasidi Danladi who confirmed the new infection during three-day training for local government immunisation officers, facilitators and consultants, said the new cases were recorded in Batsari, Mani, Ingawa and Maiadua Local Government Areas of the state.

Nasidi said that government was not happy with the emergence of the new cases despite routine immunisation against polio in the state and noted that investigation revealed that most of the affected children were those whose houses were not visited during immunisation plus days.

He said that punitive measures would henceforth be taken against focal persons and other people responsible for immunisation in places where new infections are recorded assuring that government would increase the number of teams conducting house to house immunisation for easy coverage.
