The North-Western District of the Nigerian Railways Corporation (NRC) is to recruit 281 junior staff in a bid to improve its services.

The Public Relations Officer of the district, Mr. Sheriff Razaq, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Minna that the recruitment was to reposition the corporation to deliver efficient and quality services.

``We are currently conducting an interview to boost our manpower in order to deliver quality and efficient services to our customers.''

According to him, more than 1,000 applicants applied for various positions advertised, adding that 15 of them would be recruited as station masters and 35 others as senior station masters.

He said that 11 people would be employed as level-crossing keepers, 12 at the signal and telecommunications unit and 24 in the mechanical and electrical department.

Razaq said the civil engineering department, and the shunt and cabin operating unit would employ 140 and 44 persons respectively.

According to him, the interview which commenced on June 21, is still going on as the number of applicants who turned up were far above the number expected.

``You can see the number of applicants here; they are more than 1,000. Some of them whom their names were omitted on the list of candidates were later told to wait. That is why I cannot tell you when the interview will end,’’ he said.
