Barley 19 days to the July 14 governorship election in Edo State, the leadership of the Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday in Benin City raised fresh alarm over plots by the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) government in the state to rig the election.
The PDP alleged that the ACN was conniving with Nelson Aideyan, a consultant to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to help procure observers’ cards to be distributed to ACN thugs to invade voting centres to rig the election.
Addressing a press briefing at the party’s secretariat in Benin City, PDP Chairman, Chief Dan Orbih stated that in response to the ACN allegations of plans by PDP to rig the election, it has come to the notice of the PDP that such talk is diversionary and in character of the ACN.
In a swift reaction, Edo State Chairman of the ACN, Thomas Okosun, however debunked the allegations, saying that it is a known fact that the PDP is a party that believes in bribery and short cut to electoral victory.
“I think what the PDP should have done - if they know such is going on - is to inform the police or arrest such a person if it is our party agent, if I know the name and location of such person who is about to do evil, I will do all my best by consulting security agents to stem the crime instead of waiting and making noise on television,” Okosun said.
“ It is a defeatist theory by the PDP, they are the ones planning to use corpers to rig the election. As we speak they have procured vehicles which they want to print security logos so that they can move around to commit crime. We just want the whole world to know that we are equal to the task and we will defend our votes”.
