The Lagos State Police Command on Friday called for collaboration between the police and media in the fight against crime.
The Assistant Commissioner of Police in-charge of Area C Command, Mr Egberebi Egbuson, made the call during a courtesy visit to the Lagos Office of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
The visit was part of the area commander’s familiarisation tour of organisations under his command. Egbuson has just been deployed to the area command.
He said that the police would succeed in crime reduction with the support of the media.
Egbuson said that media support in public enlightenment on the activities of the police as well as giving useful information to the police was essential.
`` The media is a good partner to fight crime. I am soliciting your cooperation to fight crime in my area and Lagos State at large.
``I will do everything possible to maintain the cordial relationship between the police and the media,’’ Egbuson said.
Egbuson promised to deploy more policemen to the Lagos Office of NAN because of the high number of people coming into the area as a result of an ongoing light rail project.
The Head of NAN Lagos office, Mr Isaac Ighure, who received the ACP and his entourage, thanked the police for providing security for the office.
He, however, requested for more.
Ighure assured the police NAN’s cooperation, saying that the agency was determined to promote peace and security.
Ighure urged police officers and men to respect the rights of journalists to discharge their duties, regretting that some police officers and men brutalised journalists covering events.
The Iponri Divisional Police Officer, Mr Kunle Olusokan, and some other senior officers accompanied the area commander.
