Ndanusa Hails Team Nigeria

The President Nigeria Olympic Committee Engr. Sani Ndanusa has hailed the performance of Team Nigeria to the 18th edition of the African Senior Athletics Championship held in Porto Novo, Benin Republic where the Nigerian athletes emerged overall winners. Team Nigeria contingent defeated defending champions, Kenya to win the championship last Sunday with 10 gold, 6 silver and 5 bronze medals to emerge overall winners.

Reacting to the feat posted by the Nigerian athletes, the NOC boss said this is a pointer to what to expect at the Olympics. “I commend the Nigerian athletes to the continental championship. This is to give Nigerians hope as we intensify plans for the Olympics. This is a pointer to what to expect at the Olympics. The feat of the Nigerian athletes at the African championship tells that we have athletics team to rely on for medals.”

He said the NOC which will soon take over the athletes will support the athletics team all the way so as to ensure that they make Nigeria proud. “The NOC will support the team as we plan towards making history in London.” He concluded.

Meanwhile, the Athletics Federation of Nigeria yesterday released its list for the Olympic Games. To represent Nigeria in the men’s 100 meters category are; Obinna Metu, Ogho Oghene, and Peter Emelieze. In the 110 meters hurdles, there is Selim Nurudeen while in the 400 meters hurdles Amaechi Morton will represent Nigeria. In long jump, there is Stanley Gbageke while Tosin Oke was picked for triple jump. In the 4x400 meters event, there are Saul Weigpowa, Abiola Onokoya, Isah Salihu, Tobi Ogunmola, Segun Ogunkole and Godday James. On probation are Noah Akwu and Stanley Azie in 200 meters while Jessica Oanaja is also on standby in the 100 meters hurdle.

In the 100 meters women there are Blessing Okagbare, Lawretta Ozoh and Christy Udoh. In the 200 meters, Gloria Asumun and Christy Udoh while the 400 meters has Regina George and Omolara Omotosho and Ajoke Odumosun in the 400 meters hurdle. In high jump women there is Doreen Amata,  long jump; Blessing Okagbare; shot put; Vivian Chukwuemeka; hapthaton; Uhuoma Naomi; marathon has Esther Obiekwe and women hurdle Seun Adigun.

In the 4x100 women there are Blessing Okagbare, Gloria Asumun, Lawretta Ozoh, Damola Osayomi, Wisdom Isoken and Christy Udoh. 4x400 relay; the list include Regina George, Omolara Omotosho, Bukola Abogunloko, Endurance Abinuwa, Idaraotu and Margaret Etim.
