The Acting Vice-Chancellor of University of Lagos (UNILAG), Prof. Rahamon Bello, has lauded the U.S. Government for its support to the institution.

Bello made the commendation on Thursday during a distinguished 50th anniversary public lecture of the institution.

The lecture was entitled, ``Leadership, Good Governance and Generative Cities as prerequisite for National Development ``.

The lecture was part of activities lined up to mark the institution’s anniversary in October and was anchored by the Faculty of Environmental Sciences.

Bellosaid that the university would remain open for progressive collaborations and dynamic synergies that would make the nation and the world at large, a better place.

The Chief Host of the ceremony, Prof.  Leke Oduwaye, who is also the Dean, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, said that cities propelled growth, adding that they were the indicators of human and general reflections of civilisation.

Oduwayesaid that already, the faculty was in the process of establishing a CityLab, which would serve as a one stop shop/resource facility for information on Nigerian cities.

In his address, the U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Terrence McCulley, emphasised the need for the Federal Government to find a lasting solution to the challenges posed by the Boko Haram Sect.

``Nigerians in the North today feel betrayed by governments at all levels as they feel they have not been provided with the basic things of life, such as schools and other infrastructure.

``Criminals and terrorists exploited these sentiments and took advantage of the dearth of governments’ presence to grow their nefarious organisations.

``This is one reason why the U.S. supports the improvement of schools, health programme and infrastructure in Northern Nigeria as part of efforts to tackle the current terrorist activities, `` he said.
