Former international football stars and top officials of leading telecommunication industry operators were on hand to grace the opening ceremony of the 2012 Nigeria Telecommunications Games (NTG) which kicked off on Sunday at the University of Lagos Sports Complex with live music, dance performances and a kiddie’s fun park.

Former African Player of the Year, Victor Ikpeba and ex-international WaidiAkanni attended the ceremony as a mark of support and endorsement for sports and healthy living in corporate Nigeria. They were joined on the VIP stands by senior officials of the participating teams that came to personally cheer their respective teams to victory. From MTN was the General Manager and Head of Legal Team, Mrs. RumeRotimi, Mr. John Murray, the Chief Information Officer of Etisalat, LadipoAdegoke, the Key Account Manager at Alcatel Lucent and Charles Wagner, the Ericsson Domain Are Manager.

Ikpeba described the Nigeria Telecom Games as the biggest sporting event in corporate Nigeria and urged the teams “to compete fairly and stay healthy to continue to render the very important communications services that are critical to the nation’s economy”.

Fela Bank-Olemoh, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MediaVision Limited noted that there will be medals to be won in the football, Athletics, Table Tennis, Chess, Scrabble and Lawn Tennis events. He then urged all the participants to ‘give your best and inculcate the spirit of fair play at all times”. The opening match was between 2011 Nigeria Bankers Games runners-up, Standard Chartered Bank and UNILEVER Plc which the Nigeria FMCG Games debutants won by a lone goal. MTN started their title defense against new entrants, Alcatel Lucent in great form winning 3-0 with goals from OlakunleOjabowale, UbongIdung and Alichie.

David Ore’s lone strike on the 12th minute kept Etisalat in touching distance of cup holders, MTN following their narrow win over LM Ericsson in the second game of the day. It was an improved performance by Ericsson as they lost the equivalent fixture last year. The tournament continues this weekend with events in all the listed sports.
