A Federal High Court sitting in Ado-Ekiti on Tuesday sentenced a 72-year-old man, Michael Ojo, to one year imprisonment after pleading guilty to possession of Indian hemp.
Iliya Waji, the prosecutor and Senior Legal Officer with the NDLEA, had told the court that Ojo was caught with 800 grammes of marijuana on July 4 at Ire-Ekiti, Ekiti State.
The offence, he said, was contrary to and punishable under Section 11 (d) of the NDLEA Act, Cap N30 Laws of the Federation 2004.
When his plea was taken, Ojo pleaded guilty to the charge and begged Justice Emmanuel Obile to temper justice with mercy.
The defence counsel, Benson Nduka, pleaded with the judge to consider the age and health condition of Ojo.
Obile gave the convict an option of N40,000 fine.
