Graft: 1,500 Cases Pending In Court – EFCC

An 18-year old boy, Segun Oladosu, has been sentenced to three years imprisonment with hard labour and 10 strokes of the cane for stealing packets of cigarettes valued at N1,000.

Oladosu, who was arraigned on a three-count charge of conspiracy, house-breaking and stealing before an Osogbo Chief Magistrates’ Court, pleaded guilty to the charges.

Police Prosecutor Solomon Oladele had told the court that the convict, on July 23, at Gbaemu area in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, conspired with other suspects now at large and broke into the shop of one Theresa Olatunji, stealing the cigarettes.

Oladele said that other items stolen by the convict included bottles of spirits valued at N9,000, one T-shirt valued at N1,500 and a mobile phone valued at N5,000.

He put the total value of the stolen items at N16,500.

The prosecutor said that all the offences were punishable under Sections 516, 413 and 390 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2003.
He further informed the court that Oladosu had been arraigned on three different occasions for similar offences.

Delivering judgement, Chief Magistrate Adewumi Makanjuola sentenced Oladosu to three years imprisonment with hard labour and without an option of fine.

He ordered the prosecutor to give the convict 10 strokes of the cane in front of the shop where he committed the offence.

Makanjuola also directed the prison authorities to give the convict 10 strokes of the cane monthly until he showed signs of remorse. (NAN)
