The people of Rumuomoi community in Obio/Akpor local government area of Rivers State have dragged the Nigerian Army to the State House of Assembly over what they described as ‘forceful eviction’ from their homes by soldiers from 2 Brigade, Bori Camp, Port Harcourt.
The community, which shares boundary with the Army barracks, had been at logger-head with the authorities of the 2 Brigade over the ownership of Ogodoni/Lugbo land situated in the community.
In a petition dated July 17, 2012 and addressed to the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Otelemaba Daniel Amachree, the people of the community, stated that the Nigerian Army had refused to obey the judgement of a Port Harcourt High Court presided over by Justice Samuel Amadi, which barred it from entering the disputed land.
The petition, which was signed by a legal practitioner, Mr. Uche Chilaka on behalf of the traditional ruler of the community, Elder Owhonda
Chinwo and six others, stated that it was surprising to them that Nigerian Army, who had been with them as boundary neighbours since after the civil war, in recent times started threatening lives and properties of members of the community.
It read in parts; “That our clients as natives and members of Rumuomoi community are the owners and in occupation of vast land known as and called Ogodoni/Lugbo land situate and being lying at Rumuomoi community.
“That the said land has a common boundary with Nigerian Army, 2 Brigade Command, Port Harcourt classified as Bori Camp.
