The Inspector-General of Police, Mr Mohammed Abubakar, has appealed to members of the Police Officers Wives Association (POWA) to be focused and united in the interest of the association.

Abubakar made the appeal in Abuja on Friday at a meeting with the state, zonal and national executive officers of POWA, at the Force Headquarters.

The IG, who did not give any reason for summoning the meeting, appealed to the leadership of the association to carry every member along in its programmes.

He reminded them that POWA existed because they were wives of police officers and therefore should be subject to control.

``You are POWA because you are our wives. You cannot just do what you like, we must control you, we must tell you things you should do; we must equally advise you.

``I am looking forward to seeing a more pragmatic and action POWA that is very effective, that is united, that is respected and result oriented.’’

The IG advised them to be focused, just and fair and act as mothers to all members, especially in the distribution of gifts and other forms of donations to the association.

``As chairpersons, what role do you play, are you actually a mother to all, are you fair and just in the distribution of what comes through you officially or otherwise.

``There is need for us to refocus, when you hear about POWA before, POWA is a family. But the question I will ask, are you still a family.

``Do we still have the interest of each and every member of the association at heart, do we represent the larger majority of junior ones that we are supposed to represent,’’ he asked.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that after the IG’s remark, newsmen were asked to leave while the meeting continued behind closed doors. (NAN)
