Justice Husseini Baba-Yusuf of the FCT High Court on Friday criticised the police for poor performance in the discharge of their constitutional duty.
Baba-Yusuf made the comments following the absence of the police in court to argue against a bail application filed by a rape accused, Pastor Basil Princewill, the General Overseer of Mountain Movers Fire Ministries International, Nyanya, Abuja.
Princewill is accused of raping a 14-year-old girl.
Counsel to the accused, Ms Esther Uzoma, had filed a motion asking the court to release Princewill on bail on liberal terms.
The motion was filed on Aug. 22 but the police failed to appear in court for the hearing.
Uzoma urged the court to grant her client bail in view of the uncontroverted depositions in the affidavit in support of the bail application.
She further said that the court should hold that the Commissioner of Police, who is the complainant and respondent to the motion for bail, was not opposed to the release of the accused person.
Baba-Yusuf adjourned case to Sept. 11 for ruling on bail application. (NAN)
