The Akwa Ibom Government has reiterated its determination to reposition the state-owned Collage of Education, Afaha Nsit, in the Nsit Ibom Local Government Area of the state.
The state Commissioner for Education, Mrs Eunice Thomas, made this known on Friday when she led principal officers of the ministry on inspection visit to the college.
Thomas attributed the poor state of infrastructure in the institution to information gap between the school and the State Government.
``The education ministry will not delay in making sure that the information gap is bridged and also establish a strong synergy between the collage and the government.
``There is no doubt that the school is faced with hydra-headed but surmountable problems.
``The government is ready to commence construction of a perimeter fence, hostel and drainage systems in the collage before the end 2012,” she promised.
She said other issues to be addressed included, the provision of desks for staff and students, issuance of promotion letters to qualified lectures and boosting the college laboratory science with facilities that would enhance effective teaching and learning.
``My coming here today has afforded me the opportunity to see the clear picture of numerous challenges the school is passing through.
``Thank God we have an education-friendly governor and I assure everybody here today that the school will soon experience the wind of Gov. Godswill Akpabio’s uncommon transformations drive.”
Thomas noted that the college as a teachers’ training institution plays a vital role in the success of the State Government’s free and compulsory education policy.
Earlier, the Acting Provost of the Collage, Dr Patrick Uko, said the commissioner was the first to pay an official visit to the school shortly after being appointed.
Uko maintained that the visit pointed strongly to the level of interest the State Government had to reposition the collage to limelight.
He thanked the governor for ensuring prompt and regular payment of salaries, the payment of Consolidated Tertiary Education Salary Structure and readiness to assist the college in its accreditation exercise. (NAN)
