A flood menace, which has continued to ravage some part of Delta State, has sacked residents of Benikruku community, with no fewer than 16 persons feared dead.
The community along the coastline of Gbaramutu kingdom of Warri-South was full of hopes and expectant of the benefits accruable to a community from Chevron Nigeria limited that has been in operations for over 40 years, but this was not to be with allegations of neglect and abandonment said to have reduced its residents to abject poverty.
LEADERSHIP, however, gathered that the history of Benikrukru community has remained that of a people at the verge of collapse with flood threatening to wash the community away.
LEADERSHIP checks revealed that apart from the problem of flooding in the area, residents in the last few years have been suffered from ailments, manifesting in swollen legs, which has reportedly led to the death of many.
Confirming their ordeals, community leader, Chief Jeffery Ojogua, said: “We are highly disturbed and devastated by the menace of floods; Chevron refused to assist us, and many of our sons and daughters have died.”
Chevron is said to be operating Abiteye flow station where they have drilled for oil since 1969. The host community say they have not benefited anything from the oil major.
Raining reasons have made things difficult for the residents as the environment is flooded and several houses destroyed.
