Team Nigeria’s quest to have a good outing at the All Africa Games in Maputo, yielded good dividend yesterday as the country registered its name on the medals chart with medals from Karate and tennis.
In karate, the duo of Hope Adiele and Efe Zino won silver and bronze respectively. Adiele’s medal came in the 81kg male category, while Zino won bronze in the 75kg. The story was the same in the tennis court where the Nigerian girls won a silver in the team event.
In basketball, Nigeria’s female team defeated kenya 63-61 to qualify for the semi finals, where it is now sure of picking a medal. In table tennis, Team Nigeria beat Democratic Republic of Congo 3-0 in the male team event.
In boxing, Nigeria qualified for the next round in the 81 and 69 kg male categories.
Nigeria’s Chef de Mission Alhassan Yakmut, who was impressed with Nigeria’s showing yesterday noted that it is a sign of good things to come, even as he added that action is yet to start in the country’s areas of strength where the color of the medals being won will change to gold.
“So far, so good. I am happy we are now on the medals chart, but we are yet to get to the crucial stages of our areas of strength, such as athletics, table tennis and judo. I am optimistic, we are going to do well,” he said.
