With just one week into the announcement of MTN’s N1billion customer reward package, thousands of customers have besieged MTN registration centres to register their mobile phone numbers in compliance with the Nigerian Communication Commission’s (NCC) directive to register the Subscriber Identity Modules (SIM).

In apparent response to MTN’s call to subscribers to register, load any amount, join any of its competitive priced tariff plans and have a chance to win part of the N1billion largesse, thousands of hopefuls are thronging the telecom giant’s registration centres daily to register their SIMs in what an official in the Opebi MTN Service Centre calls ‘unprecedented’. He hinted that there had been a two-fold increase on the number of daily registrations.

The official who pleaded anonymity said the numbers had jumped from an average of 200 to an average of 400 daily.

Confirming the jump in customer SIM registrations on the back of the big reward, the firm’s general manager, Consumer Marketing, Kola Oyeyemi, said, “That is the overriding objective of the big reward programme - getting subscribers to register so that we can have a credible data base for our country. And you know, when we have such a data base, government can better plan the economy and the people would be the better for it. “We are also using this as an opportunity to say a big ‘thank you’ to over N40million people who have said ‘come rain or shine , we know MTN is the best network for us’, he added.

The MTN Big Reward was recently unveiled in a colourful ceremony by Nigeria’s biggest telecom provider in what has been described by industry watchers as the biggest and most daring reward programme ever attempted by any commercial entity in any industry anywhere in Africa.
The massive reward package will allow 10 people to win N10 million at each draw every 10 days for nine times.  Again, another 900 people will win N100, 000 each and there will be N10million worth of instant cash prizes to be won during the prize presentation ceremonies.
