A total of 12, 138 athletes and officials from 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have been accredited by the National Sports Commission (NSC) to participate at the forthcoming 17th National Sports Festival (NSF) in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

The NSC confirmed that athletes and officials concluded their participation in the 10-day  Delegates Registration Meeting (DRM) for the bi-annual games conducted by the commission at the Abuja National Stadium between May 26 and June 6, 2011.

The DRM, which is an on-line accreditation for athletes and officials is the first in the history of sports events organised by the NSF. The exercise is designed to ensure a  hitch-free accreditation of the athletes and officials taking part in the championship.

Meanwhile, the ongoing festival Torch of Unity tour of the 36 states and the FCT arrived Ilorin, Kwara, yesterday and was received by the state government officials.

It will be recalled that the movement of the Unity Torch was flagged-off by President Goodluck Jonathan on May 10, 2011, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The Unity Torch is expected to arrive Garden City, Port-Harcourt, on Saturday July 2, for the official opening of the 17th National Sports Festival at a grand ceremony.  According to the Main organising Committee (MOC) of the championship, athletes and officials are billed to arrive venue of the championship five days ahead of the commencement of the competition on the 29th of June, 2011.

Also, the MOC has approved the number of technical officials for all sports taking part in the event. Affected sports federations are currently issuing invitations for the list of officials for their various sports.
