Gunmen suspected to be armed robbers attacked a vehicle conveying the salary of the staff of Kaga local government area of Borno State yesterday, killing its cashier, and injuring a police escort attached to the vehicle.
The incident occurred at about 1pm along Maiduguri Damaturu road where the gunmen were believed to have trailed them and opened fire on the vehicle conveying the cash, killing the cashier, Wakil Ali Galangi, and wounding one of the policemen attached to the vehicle in the arm.
The gunmen later opened fire sporadically in the air to scare people and fled with the money, leaving the cashier in a pool of his blood, while the wounded policeman was immediately rushed to the hospital.
Confirming the incident, the Borno State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Simeon Midenda, told newsmen on phone that he was told that such incident happened but that he had not been briefed and the details sketchy.
It could be recalled that some time ago gunmen in separate operations attacked a vehicle conveying the salaries of staff of Shani, Jere and Kala-Balge local governments of the state. This is despite the state government’s directive to local government authorities to pay their salaries through banks.
Meanwhile luck run out of two gunmen suspected to be members of the Islamic sect, Boko Haram, who came to Zannari Ward of Maiduguri Metropolis where they attempted to kill their target at a local tea joint Wednesday evening, as they were over-powered by mob in the area and killed. The incident, our correspondent gathered, took place at about 8pm when the gunmen came to the tea joint where their target were sitting. When one of the gunmen was trying to remove his AK47 rifle, those at the scene grabbed, over-powered him and shot him dead with the same rifle. When the other gunmen tried to escape, he was also shot dead.
All efforts to get the JTF spokesman for confirmation were abortive, as his phone could be reached at the time of filing in this report.
