The technical committee of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) has endorsed five camping venues and two foreign tours for Team Nigeria’s preparation for the forthcoming 10th All African Games in Maputo, Mozambique. This was the decision reached at its inaugural meeting held at the media centre of the Abuja National stadium yesterday. The five camp venues are Jos, Ibadan, Benin, Kaduna and Abuja.

The two foreign tours are South Korea and Cuba.

Speaking to LEADERSHIP SPORTS shortly after the meeting, chairman NOC technical committee, Isah Musa Matori said the NOC in collaboration with the National Sports Commission (NSC) will ensure that the welfare of athletes to any local, continental and international events are given adequate attention. “Part of what we discussed today is to ensure that the welfare of our athletes to any major event be it local, All African Games or Olympics are given adequate attention. All African

Games is just around the corner and we have carefully selected five local camp sites for Nigeria’s preparation. The camps will be Jos, in Plateau State, Benin in Edo State, Ibadan in Oyo State, Kaduna in Kaduna state and Abuja, FCT. The team will embark on two foreign tours to South Korea and Cuba,” he said.

He said in view of the enormous responsibility given his committee to assist the NOC transform the nation’s sports sector for utmost productivity, his committee will put in place a strategic plan that will help the NOC meet their target of giving Nigeria’s sports the desired facelift. “We are aware of the enormous responsibility on our shoulders as the technical committee of the NOC. Because we are the backbone of the NOC, they can’t achieve anything without us drawing out plans and strategies for them to follow. This is part of the things we discussed today.”

He stated further that different methods have been put in place by the NSC to prevent doping scandals that almost marred Nigeria’s impressive performance at last year’s Commonwealth Games in India at the Maputo games. “NOC is not very much involved in All African Games, but what we are doing is to assist the NSC in achieving good results at the All African Games. And I can assure you that different measures have been put in place by the NSC to prevent what happened during the Commonwealth Games,” he stated.
