Occupants of three commercial buses were early yesterday robbed at Orie Umumba, in Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State.
An eye witness told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the robbers were armed and masked during the operation.
According to the account, the robbers laid siege on one lane of the Enugu- Onitsha dual carriageway, along the Umumba Ndi Agu section as early as 8 a.m. firing into the air.
Three vehicles, Happiness Mass Transit, XJA95NSH, Romchi Mass Transit, XD743AWK and a Peace Mass Transit which number could not be ascertained as at press time, fell victim to the attack.
NAN reported that the attack brought traffic to a standstill on the busy dual carriageway for almost 45 minutes.
Stranded passengers including some Police escorts disembarked from their vehicles and took positions along the road, ready to make a dash into nearby bushes
However, traffic started moving at about 8.45 am when the Enugu State Police command mobilised its men to the scene.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the state, Mr Ebere Amarizu had earlier assured NAN when contacted on telephone that policemen would be mobilised to the scene.
NAN reported that the robbers had departed the scene when Police arrived.
One of the victims, Bob Ude told NAN that the Peace Mass Transit he was travelling in from Enugu unknowingly ran into the robbers.
