Vice-presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) in the April 2011 election and pastor of the Latter Rain Assembly, Mr Tunde Bakare, has urged President Goodluck Jonathan to address the menace of almajiri, saying that the nation is sitting on a keg of gunpowder.
According to him, the country may be heading for a crisis if the almajari syndrome in the northern parts of the country is not tackled.
Bakare, who spoke in Lagos yesterday, advised Jonathan to quickly address the problem because it posed a serious danger to the nation’s survival.
“These are people who are not educated, hungry and angry. Most of them are ready to die as they have completely lost hope; it will be in the interest of the nation if President Jonathan quickly moved in and addressed the poverty and misery in the land,” Bakare said.
He said the CPC as well as the presidential candidate of the party, General Muhammadu Buhari, were not involved in the post-election violence that ravaged some states in the north after the April 16 presidential election.
“Immediately there was violence in Kaduna, I left Lagos for Abuja and he (Buhari) also left Daura for Abuja. We met in Abuja and addressed a press conference, yet members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, were blaming us. The president did not issue any statement until six days later,” he said.
Bakare also described the suggestion of he working with the Jonathan government as a “huge joke”.
“Go and ask people like the late Bola Ige, Olu Onagoruwa and Ebenezer Babatope who went into government with the intention of serving the people but at the end of the day were rubbished,” he said, adding that he would remain in politics until honest and sincere Nigerians take over the political space from those who are presently at the helm of affairs in the country.
“I am a politician, I have no regret seeking elective office and I will stay in the CPC to re-organise it, expand it and make it appealing to hardworking and honest Nigerians so that they could also join hands to rescue this nation from the present political jobbers,” he said.
Bakare said those behind the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election and eventually killed Chief MKO Abiola would pay for it.
