It was a moment of fond memories and eulogises at the formal presentation of an Autobiography of the former Vice Chancellor of University of Benin and Nassarawa State University, Professor David Adamu Baikie titled “Against All Odds”.
Former Military head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, who chaired the book presentation, described Prof. Baikie as a distinguished Nigerian whose contribution to the growth of education would never be forgotten.
According to the former head of state, “Professor Baikie was not just a distinguished Nigerian, but a role model. “I am always proud to associate with him, we shared fun memories of growing up together, he was my earlier school mate, indeed the least I can do for a man I admire and respected so long is to be present at this event, this is more so for me because we have come a long way with Prof. Baikie, he saved several universities in their critical period.
“I must acknowledge the contribution of Prof. Baikie to the growth of Nigerian nation. As an intellectual, he creates several young minds for the good of the society and remains to his calling and his God. Prof. Baikie stood firm in conviction that God is able. He lived by this godly example, he was a role model. Prof. Baikie was indeed a role model,” Gowon said.
On his own part, the Former Minister of Defence, General Theophilus Y. Danjuma who was the book presenter, also acknowledged the contribution of Prof. Baikie to education in
Nigeria, even as he encouraged Nigerians who have excelled in the various fields of endeavour to encourage the younger generation through writing of their autobiography.
The Bishop of Sokoto Diecese, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kuka who reviewed the book said, the history of Nigeria education cannot be written without Prof. Baikie’s name mentioned, saying “Professor Baikie is one of the Nigerians who exhibited such virtues of modesty, selflessness, humility, faith in God and contentment.”
Governors of Kano, Niger, Nassarawa, Kaduna and Lagos States who were represented at the occasion also paid tribute to Prof Baikie.
The book presentation also coincided with the 80th birthday of the Author.
