A pregnant woman and six children were confirmed dead following a fire outbreak which engulfed their room behind Gidado Primary School in Raffuka quarters of Katsina municipal, Katsina State.
The deceased, who were all female, included a nine-month old baby, a mother of four identified as Hauwa, her children, and a six-year-old girl who died at the Katsina General Hospital following high degree burns sustained in the inferno.
It was gathered that the inferno occurred around 9pm Monday night when a kerosene lamp allegedly went up in flames.
“We saw smoke coming out of the room but all effort to break open the iron door were fruitless,” a family source who identified himself as Nasiru Yusuf said the victims died before help reached them “except for the little girl who died at the hospital.”
Sources said the men of the fire service put out the fire but not after the seven occupants of the room had perished.
When our correspondent visited Raffuka quarters, sympathizers were seen trooping in to condole with the breadwinner, Mallam Bishir Sani, a trader.
