As part of measures to track down on criminal activities around the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos , officials of the Nigeria Customs Services (NCS) yesterday impounded a cache of abandoned arms and ammunition in the strong room of the Nigeria Aviation Handling Company Limited (NAHCO), strong room.
The Customs Area Comptroller, Murtala Muhammed International Airport Command, Michael Adewole,disclosed this yesterday.
He added, the inventory of the abandoned arms and ammunition include six double barrel, one single barrel, one pump action guns one Uzzi, two magazines, one barretta pistol as well as one becheverria pistol.
Adewole listed the ammunition to include twenty pieces of 5.56 mm calibre, 19 cartridges, 12/12, 500 pieces of blank Armour and a sealed box of cartridges.
He listed the servicing accessories to include four pieces of pull trough, two brushes, oil riffle bag as well as a sling colt belt.
The customs boss explained that the dangerous items were seized from the NAHCO strong room, adding they were prohibited items that would not be allowed into the country, except by government security agencies.
He disclosed that the customs swung into action following the security information it received that some unidentified persons abandoned the arms at the strong room of NAHCO, which prompted the discovery and interception of the weapons.
Adewole explained that officials of the customs swung into action and the seizure of the arms was effectively carried out.
He said that the customs decided to carry out the exercise as part of its mandate of improving security around the airport, even as he said its officials will not fold its arms and allow such dangerous weapons to get into town in view of the security situation in some parts of the country, which have become flash points.
