Senate President, David Mark, said golf could lead Otukpo youths out of the tunnel by providing gainful employment for them in the future.

Senator Mark who stated this during the closing ceremony of David Mark Pro-Am Golf Tournament held in Otukpo recently assured the people of his commitment to the development of the game and sports generally in the country. According to him, the David Mark Pro-Am tournament remains an annual event and the next tournament would hold in February 2012.  He tasked clubs in Nigeria and Ghana to invest in youth development as it is through such initiative that the values of the ancient game could be propagated.

Senator Mark is the founder of the Otukpo Golf and Country Club, Akpegede, Benue State, which ranks as one of the best privately owned golf facilities in Nigerian rural communities.

“The club is the youngest in Nigeria and most of the youth golfers are from that community. Golf will be a source of employment for these players, some of whom are already preparing to become career professional golfers,” Mark said.

The Senate President, who is a double digit handicapped amateur golfer, is known for his commitment to the development of young golfers in Nigeria.

In 2009, his initiative, the David Mark Foundation, organised a youth development golf tournament in Abuja, to pick the country’s flag bearers to the Tiger Woods Clinic in the US this year.
