The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), has said that it generated N2.7 billion as revenue in the first quarter of this year.
Managing Director of NAMA, Mr. Nnamdi Udoh, disclosed this to members of the House Committee on Aviation who were in Lagos on Friday on a tour of the country’s aviation agencies.
Udoh gave a breakdown of the revenue generated by the airspace agency to include N955.2 million realised in January, February N698.6 million and over N1 billion in March.
A further breakdown revealed that in January the International Air Transport Association (IATA), which collects some of the revenue for NAMA paid in N483.8 million in January, N483.8 million in February and N450.47 million in March.
He said income realised from five per cent Ticket Sale Charge (TSC) stood at N263.3 million in January, with nothing realised from it in February. However, income from TSC stood at N308.4 million in March.
Udoh also told the committee that navigational charges fetched NAMA N199.2 million in January, N195.7 million in February and N233. 7 million in March.
He said NAMA also made money from non navigational charges in the first quarter of 2011. Revenue generated from this sector was N8. 853 million in January, N19. 1 million and N15. 5 million in February and March respectively.
Answering questions from House Committee on Aviation on whether the Total Radar Coverage of the Nigerian Airspace (TRACON) could be used for both civil and military aviation, Udoh urged the Nigeria Airforce (NAF) could acquire the Long Range Primary Radar (LRPR) to improve security surveillance. He said the LRPR was required for the NAF to continuously monitor enemy aircraft, and boost the security oversight as well secure Nigeria’s airspace.
Speaking on behalf of the committee, a member, Bethel Amadi, commended the agency for its presentation and for its efforts to make Nigerian airspace safe.
