Unknown gunmen yesterday killed one policeman and injured two others at the Mile Two area of Diobu, a densely populated axis of Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.
LEADERSHIP gathered that the gunmen, numbering about three, opened fire on the policemen attached to the Azikiwe Road Police Post, who were on a stop-and-search duty in the area.
A resident of the area, Mr. Ernest Ogochukwu, who witnessed the attack, told LEADERSHIP that the hoodlums were driving through the Azikiwe Road and on approaching the check-point they opened fire, prompting the policemen to respond.
Ogochukwu disclosed that the hoodlums, after successfully killing the policeman, abandoned their vehicles and escaped through the Abel Jumbo water-front.
Police image maker in the state, Ben Ugwuegbulem, who confirmed the incident in a text message to LEADERSHIP, explained that the hoodlums parked their Honda car along Abel Jumbo Street in Diobu, a distance from Azikiwe Road, and opened fire on the police men shortly after the police received an alert about their presence in the area.
Ugwuegbulem said the police fired back at the hoodlums but that one of the officers sustained a bullet injury, and was was being treated at an undisclosed hospital in the city.
The police image maker said efforts were on to trace the hoodlums and urged the public to go about their business without fear, assuring them that the police were doing everything possible to ensure a safe environment for the residents.
