Three persons arrested in connection with the deadly bank robbery in Akure, Ondo State, a fortnight ago have been released after police found that they were arrested in error.
They were released by the Ondo State Police Command after their innocence was confirmed.
Armed robbers had raided Diamond Bank Plc, Oyemekun Road in Akure two weeks ago and killed four persons.
The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Sani Magaji, who confirmed the release of the suspects during a chat with journalists in his office yesterday, admitted that the suspects were actually arrested in error.
The state police boss however disclosed that a member of the real gang that carried out the robbery had been arrested and was receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in Akure.
Magaji said, “We carried out an extensive investigation after the three persons were arrested. We ascertained their identity and we discovered that they were victims of circumstance. They ran into the confusion but they were lucky to have escaped any form of mob action.
“Investigations showed that they are contractors on their way to Abuja from Lagos. We found on them a letter that indicated they were actually on a business trip,” he said.
